"with all these little games"
the Colourist

Recently I turned "read receipts" on. If you are unfamiliar with "read receipts" it is a little line of text below the last message (in a conversation) sent to your iPhone from another iPhone. It tells you when that person has read your message.

Normally I'm against announcing that I have read someone's text BUT I had a change of heart. Sometimes I have a hard time remembering to answer texts. I'll be busy doing something and check my phone but not have time to answer. Most of the time I honestly just forget to send a message back, but sometimes I need more time to think about what I'm going to say and then I forget. Later I'll realize I forgot and then it's just guilt, guilt, guilt about forgetting.

Turning on read receipts has made me more accountable to answering messages in a timely fashion for the most part. It's the added knowledge that the other person can see that I've read it. And so far I would say I have increased my response time by a crazy amount.

The only problem I've noticed is that it has slightly encouraged my idea that (sometimes) texting is a game. When I don't answer/continue a conversation and the other person can see that I've read their text and simply chosen not to answer; I feel like I have won. But in reality I just lost by turning a conversation into a game. So I'm trying not to see it as a game anymore. I'll let you know how that goes by answering your texts.
